Welcome to Gilbert, Arizona! Incorporated in 1920, Gilbert is a fairly new city that has grown by leaps and bounds just in the last twenty years. Gilbert prides itself as a forward thinking, family oriented place with a small town atmosphere but big city amenities. Located in Maricopa County, Gilbert is cited as the fourth fastest growing city in the nation and was ranked 28th on the top 100 places to live in America.
Gilbert has made a transformation from an agriculture based community to one with an economically diverse suburban center, with the focus on jobs in life science and health services, technology and clean, renewable energy.
History
Less than 100 years ago, Gilbert was a small agriculturally based square mile town that was just barely a train station. That was about to change though, when the Arizona Eastern Railway had asked, in 1902, for donations of right of way to lay down a rail line between Phoenix and Florence. A local land owner donated what was needed and the town sprung up around it, eventually taking on the name of the man who had provided the siding, Mr. Gilbert. Known as the “Hay Capital of the World” until the late 20’s that began to change when it began to take on its current status, sending the population from under 2,000 to over 220,000 today.
